Research by WRAP [1] has estimated that around 200,000 tonnes of waste are produced at the garment manufacturing stage for clothing in use each year in the UK. The research provides detail on the combined losses during finishing and making up of cotton and polyester garments; cotton data is summarised on the figure to the left. Losses can clearly be significant, and hence so too is the potential for design efficiency improvements to reduce waste and material use.
